Social Saunter – Checking out the West

Recently, some members living west of the CBD had come across a property they thought may be of interest to coupers. Although other locations have had a higher priority for Urban Coup in the past, it was decided to organise a social saunter to have a look at West Footscray as an introduction for those unfamiliar or curious to know more about this area and its possible alignment to Urban Coup’s vision.

Interested members met at Footscray West Station, then walked to the prospective site on the corner of Barkly and Gordon Streets to check it out. Thanks to the research work done by the land search committee before the trip, there was some solid background information available, which informed a lot of the discussion around the pros and cons of this particular site.

To get the feel of the area, the group then moved on to explore the suburb and what it had to offer. After wandering the local neighbourhood via a café for coffee, and circumnavigating the local parks, the group caught the bus into Footscray proper to get a sense of the opportunities there. The town precinct includes the Footscray Market, Post Office, restaurants, grocers, Kmart; supermarkets, music and specialty shops, as well as the community art centre. The tour ended with people heading head home via the Footscray Station.

A similar tour was held on a following weekend for those who had missed the first trip. Feedback for the area itself has been very positive, although the actual site has been rejected - primarily due to its very busy and noisy location.
